MIL-PRF-87108B
3.4.2 Transfer assembly. The transfer assembly shall consist of a diffuser, a coupler, and a
manual actuating device. The transfer assembly shall also have an outlet, an inlet, a safety port,
and an opening for venting air from a packed life raft. The device, upon actuation, shall inflate an
LRU-16/P or LRU-17/P life raft to its designed shape, size, and at least minimum, but not more
than maximum pressure within 30 seconds.
3.4.2.1 Inadvertent discharge. The transfer assembly shall incorporate a device which, until
removed, prevents inadvertent, unintended discharge of inflation medium.
3.4.2.2 Diffuser. The transfer assembly shall include a removable diffuser to dissipate the thrust
of the inflation medium in the case of damage or mishandling resulting in an inadvertent discharge.
The diffuser shall be capable of insertion and tightening into the coupler, and loosening and
removal from the coupler without the use of tools. After proper tightening, it shall not loosen
during transportation and storage.
3.5
Interface.
3.5.1 Compatibility. The inflation device shall be compatible with the LRU-16/P and LRU-17/P
life rafts as described in MIL-L-83491.
3.5.2 Weight. The weight of the inflation device (less the diffuser) with a charged container
shall not exceed 2.01 lbs.
3.5.3 Screw threads. Screw threads, if used on the inflation device, shall conform to
FED-STD-H28 or any other commercially acceptable thread standard.
3.5.4 Coupler. The coupler shall attach the inflation device to the life raft connector conforming
to AF Drawing 76212.
3.6
Removal of parts. The inflation medium container shall be rechargeable through the
transfer assembly outlet without special tools. Other than removal of the diffuser, disassembly of
the inflation device shall not be required to recharge the container.
3.7
Performance.
3.7.1 Leakage. With the transfer assembly in the closed position, the inflation device shall not
leak when exposed to temperatures ranging from -65 to 160 °F.
3.7.2 Vent leakage. With the transfer assembly in the open position and 2.0 lbs per square inch
gage (psig) pressure applied to the outlet of the transfer assembly, the leakage from the transfer
assembly shall not exceed 0.2 psig/min.
3.7.3 Vent flow. With the transfer assembly in the off position, the flow of inflation medium
through the transfer assembly opening shall be not less than 61 cubic inches per minute when a
pressure of 8 inches of water is applied to the outlet of the transfer assembly.
